Factors Affecting Protein-Drug Binding: Patient-Related Factors

90
Protein-drug binding, a pivotal aspect of pharmacokinetics, is subject to considerable variability influenced by an array of patient-related factors. The intricate interplay of age, individual differences, and pathological conditions significantly impact the binding dynamics and subsequent pharmacological effects.
Age stands as a key determinant in protein-drug binding. Neonates, characterized by low albumin content, experience heightened concentrations of unbound drugs such as phenytoin and...

Factors Affecting Illness

4.3K
When a person's physical, emotional, intellectual, social development or spiritual functioning is compromised, this deviation from a healthy normal state is called illness. Illness creates stress that in turn harms individuals. Irritation, anger, denial, hopelessness, and fear are behavioral and emotional changes an individual experiences in the phases of illness. A variety of factors influence a person's health and well-being.
For instance, risk factors are connected to illness,...

Planning Nursing Care I

4.6K
The planning phase of the nursing process helps nurses set priorities, outline patient-centered goals and expected outcomes, and tailor nursing interventions to align with the aligned care plan. Through the planning phase, the nurse applies critical thinking skills to align and develop interventions according to the patient's needs. It provides continuity of care allowing patients to receive the maximum benefit from treatment. It serves as a pilot plan for allocating individual staff to a...

Factors Affecting Drug Response: Overview

2.0K
When it comes to infants and young children, they are typically administered smaller doses of medication in comparison to adults. This is primarily because their organ functions still need to fully develop, meaning their bodies are not as efficient at metabolizing or eliminating drugs. Additionally, their blood-brain barrier is more permeable than in adults. As a result, high concentrations of drugs can easily penetrate the central nervous system (CNS), potentially leading to neurological...

Summary

Patient age and race are key factors influencing advance directive (AD) completion in metastatic cancer patients. Older patients and certain racial demographics are more likely to complete ADs, highlighting areas for targeted intervention.

Area of Science:

  • Oncology
  • Palliative Care
  • Health Services Research

Background:

  • Advance care planning (ACP) ensures end-of-life (EOL) care aligns with patient wishes, goals, and values.
  • Despite known negative impacts, only one-third of US adults have written advance directives (ADs).
  • Understanding patient and caregiver factors influencing AD completion is crucial, especially in metastatic cancer.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the relationship between patient and family caregiver demographics and processes and their influence on AD completion.
  • To identify key demographic characteristics associated with advance directive completion in patients with metastatic cancer.

Main Methods:

  • Cross-sectional descriptive correlational study utilizing secondary data analysis.
  • Sample comprised 235 patients with metastatic cancer and their associated caregivers.
  • Logistic regression analysis was used to examine predictor variables for AD completion.

Main Results:

  • Out of 12 predictor variables, only patient age and race significantly predicted AD completion.
  • Patient age demonstrated a greater and unique contribution to explaining AD completion compared to patient race.
  • This suggests demographic factors play a role in the utilization of advance directives.

Conclusions:

  • Patient age and race are significant demographic predictors of advance directive completion in metastatic cancer patients.
  • Further research is needed to understand and address the historically low rates of AD completion in this population.
  • Interventions may need to consider age and race when promoting advance care planning.
