Summary

Gutta-percha (GP) cone diameters do not match their corresponding endodontic files, even within the same manufacturer. This discrepancy was observed across multiple file brands, potentially impacting the tightness of root canal seals.

Area of Science:

  • Endodontics
  • Dental Materials Science

Background:

  • Manufacturers produce gutta-percha (GP) cones intended to match endodontic file sizes for simplified obturation and a tight seal.
  • Variations in GP cone diameter relative to file diameter can compromise the effectiveness of root canal filling.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the accuracy of intra-manufacture gutta-percha (GP) cone diameters compared to their corresponding endodontic file diameters at various canal depths.
  • To determine if GP cones provide a precise fit for their designated endodontic files.

Main Methods:

  • Twenty endodontic files and their corresponding master gutta-percha (GP) cones from four brands (Reciproc, WaveOne, ProTaper, Mtwo) were analyzed.
  • A laser micrometer was used to measure the actual diameters of files and GP cones at D0, D1, D3, and D6 levels.
  • Statistical analysis using the independent t-test was performed to compare diameters, with significance set at P<0.05.

Main Results:

  • GP master cone diameters were significantly larger than their corresponding file diameters across all tested brands and at all measured levels.
  • ProTaper GP cones exhibited diameters closest to their corresponding files at D1 (0.35 mm) and D3 (0.48 mm).

Conclusions:

  • This in vitro study demonstrates that gutta-percha (GP) cone diameters do not consistently match the diameters of their corresponding endodontic files, even within the same manufacturer.
  • The observed size discrepancies suggest potential challenges in achieving a predictable and tight seal during root canal obturation.
