Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the impact of extensive face learning on recognition strategies.
  • To determine if increased study repetition alters the qualitative nature of face recognition memory.

Main Methods:

  • Participants studied specific faces either twice or eight times.
  • Recognition tests included previously seen faces, novel faces, and recombined faces (parts of studied faces in new configurations).

Main Results:

  • Increased study repetition (eight vs. two times) significantly raised the probability of participants correctly rejecting recombined faces as "new".
  • This effect was attributed to recollection of studied facial parts, even when presented in novel combinations.
  • Manipulating holistic processing did not change the qualitative impact of repetition on memory judgments.

  • Extensive face learning induces a qualitative shift in recognition strategy from signal detection to a dual-process model.
  • This shift is independent of the degree of holistic processing applied during face perception.
