This study presents novel cationic β-cyclodextrin modified silver nanoparticles (CβCD-AgNPs) synthesized using C-β-CD as both reducing and stabilizing agents. These nanoparticles show potential for drug loading applications, demonstrated with thymol.
Area of Science:
- Materials Science
- Nanotechnology
- Biomedical Engineering
Background:
- Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) possess unique properties driving research in synthesis and biomedical uses.
- Cationic β-cyclodextrin (C-β-CD) offers potential for nanoparticle modification and drug delivery due to its structure.
Purpose of the Study:
- To synthesize C-β-CD modified silver nanoparticles (CβCD-AgNPs) using C-β-CD as a reducing and stabilizing agent.
- To explore the drug-loading capacity of CβCD-AgNPs using thymol as a model drug, leveraging C-β-CD's inclusion complexation.
- To characterize the synthesized nanoparticles and evaluate their drug-loading performance.
Main Methods:
- Synthesis of CβCD-AgNPs using C-β-CD as reducing and stabilizing agent.
- Characterization via UV-vis, XRD, SEM, TEM, zeta potential, 1H-NMR, and FT-IR.
- Drug loading evaluation using UV-vis and HS-SPME-GC-MS, with TEM for size analysis post-loading.
Main Results:
- CβCD-AgNPs were successfully synthesized, confirmed by UV-vis and XRD.
- SEM and TEM revealed well-dispersed nanoparticles (3-13 nm) stabilized by C-β-CD, preventing aggregation.
- NMR and FT-IR confirmed C-β-CD encapsulation and reduction of AgNPs.
- Drug loading of thymol onto CβCD-AgNPs was demonstrated, evidenced by nanoparticle size increase.
Conclusions:
- C-β-CD is effective in synthesizing and stabilizing silver nanoparticles.
- The developed CβCD-AgNPs exhibit promising drug-loading capabilities via inclusion complexation.
- This approach offers a novel platform for developing functionalized nanoparticles for biomedical applications.
