Focusing of Light in the Eye01:16

Focusing of Light in the Eye

3.0K
Light rays enter the eye through the cornea, a transparent dome-shaped tissue that is the eye's outermost layer. The cornea bends or refracts, light rays traveling to the pupil. The shape of the cornea determines how much of the light is bent and whether the image will be focused correctly on the retina at the back of the eye. Once the light has passed through both refraction layers, it converges into a single focal point onto a small area. This is where photoreceptors start transforming...

Imaging Biological Samples with Optical Microscopy

4.9K
Optical microscopy uses optic principles to provide detailed images of samples. Antonie van Leeuwenhoek designed the first compound optical microscope in the 17th century to visualize blood cells, bacteria, and yeast cells. In 1830, Joseph Jackson Lister created an essentially modern light microscope. The 20th century saw the development of microscopes with enhanced magnification and resolution.
In optical microscopy, the specimen to be viewed is placed on a glass slide and clipped on the stage...

Angle Closure Glaucoma: Treatment01:28

Angle Closure Glaucoma: Treatment

600
Angle-closure glaucoma, or closed-angle glaucoma, is an eye condition where the iris bulges out and blocks the iridocorneal angle, resulting in a buildup of aqueous humor and increased intraocular pressure. Immediate medical attention is necessary due to the sudden onset of symptoms. The treatment for angle-closure glaucoma includes short-term and long-term approaches. Short-term treatment involves using eye drops like pilocarpine to lower intraocular pressure by increasing aqueous humor...

Open Angle Glaucoma: Treatment

512
In open-angle glaucoma, the iridocorneal angle remains open, but the trabecular meshwork becomes stiff, slowing down the outflow of aqueous humor. This causes a buildup of aqueous humor in the anterior chamber, leading to a sudden increase in intraocular pressure. The treatment for open-angle glaucoma focuses on reducing the elevated intraocular pressure by either decreasing the secretion of aqueous humor or increasing its outflow.

Summary

The new violet light-filtering Tecnis Symfony OptiBlue (ZXR00V) intraocular lens (IOL) offers similar vision range to the standard Symfony (ZXR00) IOL. ZXR00V significantly reduces halos and improves contrast vision, enhancing visual quality.

Area of Science:

  • Ophthalmology
  • Biomedical Engineering
  • Optics

Background:

  • Intraocular lenses (IOLs) are crucial for vision restoration after cataract surgery.
  • Extended-depth-of-focus (EDOF) IOLs aim to provide a continuous range of vision.
  • Dysphotopsia, such as halos and glare, can negatively impact visual quality with some IOLs.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the visual performance and dysphotopsia characteristics of the Tecnis Symfony OptiBlue (ZXR00V) EDOF IOL.
  • To compare the ZXR00V IOL with the standard Tecnis Symfony (ZXR00) IOL.

Main Methods:

  • Simulated visual acuity defocus curves and Modulation Transfer Function (MTF) measurements were used to assess the range of vision and image quality.
  • Light scatter (straylight parameter) and retinal veiling luminance (RVL) were measured and simulated to predict effects on dysphotopsias.
  • Contrast enhancement under challenging light conditions was calculated based on RVL.

Main Results:

  • The ZXR00V and ZXR00 IOLs demonstrated comparable simulated visual acuity defocus curves and image quality.
  • The ZXR00V IOL showed a 19% improvement in halo performance (straylight parameter) compared to the ZXR00 IOL.
  • The ZXR00V IOL resulted in a 12% to 17% reduction in RVL, enhancing contrast vision by 9% to 13%.

Conclusions:

  • The Tecnis Symfony OptiBlue (ZXR00V) IOL provides a similar range of vision and tolerance to refractive error as the ZXR00 IOL.
  • Violet light-filtering technology in the ZXR00V IOL effectively mitigates dysphotopsias.
  • The ZXR00V IOL enhances contrast vision, particularly under challenging lighting conditions.
