Summary

Metaplastic breast cancer (MBC), a triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) subtype, shows poor response to neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NAC). MBC patients had a 20% NAC response rate versus 85% in other TNBC patients, with higher recurrence rates.

Area of Science:

  • Oncology
  • Breast Cancer Research

Background:

  • Triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) management often involves neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NAC).
  • Metaplastic breast cancer (MBC) is a rare TNBC subtype with distinct histology and known resistance to standard therapies.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the clinical characteristics and treatment outcomes of MBC.
  • To compare the efficacy of neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NAC) in MBC versus other TNBC subtypes.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective study of MBC patients (n=22) diagnosed between January 2012 and July 2022.
  • Comparison with a control group of TNBC patients (n=42) from 2020.
  • Analysis of demographic data, tumor characteristics, NAC response, and recurrence rates.

Main Results:

  • MBC patients exhibited a significantly lower response rate to NAC (20%) compared to other TNBC patients (85%) (P = .003).
  • Recurrence rates were higher in the MBC group (23%) than in the TNBC control group (0%) (P = .013).

Conclusions:

  • Metaplastic breast cancer demonstrates poor response to neoadjuvant chemotherapy.
  • MBC has a higher risk of recurrence compared to other triple-negative breast cancer subtypes, necessitating novel therapeutic strategies.
