  • To evaluate pulmonary function in patients with beta-thalassemia/Hb E.
  • To identify the types of ventilatory defects and assess gas exchange.

  • Pulmonary function tests were conducted on 30 patients.
  • Tests included spirometry (VC, FEV1, FEV1/FVC) and diffusing capacity.
  • Arterial blood gases were analyzed for resting hypoxemia.

Main Results:

  • Only one patient had normal pulmonary function.
  • Abnormal vital capacity (VC), forced expiratory volume in 1 second (FEV1), and FEV1/FVC were observed in most patients.
