    Summary

    Hemodialysis and transplantation are effective treatments for end-stage renal failure caused by polycystic kidney disease. Patients with polycystic kidney disease experienced better kidney function after transplantation compared to other renal failure groups.

    Background:

    • Polycystic kidney disease (PKD) is a leading cause of end-stage renal failure (ESRF).
    • Treatment options for ESRF include hemodialysis and renal transplantation.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To evaluate the outcomes of hemodialysis and renal transplantation in patients with ESRF due to PKD.
    • To compare complication rates and graft function in PKD patients versus those with other renal failure etiologies.

    Main Methods:

    • Retrospective analysis of 24 patients with ESRF due to PKD undergoing hemodialysis and/or transplantation.
    • Comparison of complication rates during dialysis with a control group.
    • Assessment of kidney function and patient survival post-cadaver renal transplantation.

    Main Results:

    • Dialysis complication rates in PKD patients were similar to controls.
    • A higher incidence of HLA A3 and HLA B7 was observed in PKD patients.
    • Post-transplant kidney function was significantly better in PKD patients compared to controls.
    • Patient survival rates were comparable between PKD and control groups.

    Conclusions:

    • Hemodialysis and renal transplantation are viable treatment options for ESRF in PKD patients.
    • Pre-transplant bilateral nephrectomy is not routinely necessary for PKD patients.
    • PKD patients demonstrate superior graft function after renal transplantation.
