Summary

Hepatitis D virus (HDV) infection markers were assessed in 619 Hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg)-positive individuals in eastern Sicily. Familial clustering suggests close body contact is a key transmission route for HDV.

Area of Science:

  • Hepatology
  • Virology
  • Infectious Diseases

Background:

  • Hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection is a global health concern.
  • Hepatitis D virus (HDV) is a unique RNA virus that requires HBV for replication.
  • Understanding HDV prevalence and transmission is crucial for public health strategies.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the prevalence of Hepatitis D virus (HDV) infection markers in HBsAg-positive individuals in eastern Sicily.
  • To explore potential transmission routes of HDV in this population.

Main Methods:

  • Sera from 619 HBsAg-positive subjects (1975-1985) were tested for HDV markers (HDAg, anti-HD).
  • Antibodies to HBcore of IgM type (anti-HBcIgM) and the HBe-anti-HBe system were also analyzed.
  • Subjects included asymptomatic carriers, acute hepatitis patients, and chronic liver disease patients.

Related Experiment Videos

Main Results:

  • No delta antigen (HDAg) was detected in any samples.
  • Antibodies to delta (anti-HD) were found in 16.3% of chronic liver disease patients, 6% of asymptomatic carriers, and 5.4% of acute hepatitis patients.
  • Parenteral transmission was unlikely, but familial clustering indicated close body contact as a significant transmission route.

Conclusions:

  • HDV infection prevalence in eastern Sicily appears lower than in other Sicilian regions, potentially due to lower HBsAg carrier rates.
  • Close body contact is suggested as a primary mode of HDV transmission in this population.
  • Parenteral transmission of HDV plays a minor role in eastern Sicily.
