Allergic reactions related to drugs are hypersensitivity responses driven by the immune system and bear no connection to the drug's therapeutic action. Summary

Allergic contact dermatitis (ACD) is common in older adults. While patch test reactions were less frequent, clinically relevant reactions were more common in older adults compared to younger individuals.

Background:

  • Allergic contact dermatitis (ACD) presents a significant health concern in the elderly population.
  • Existing literature on ACD prevalence in older adults is inconsistent.
  • Data on contact irritant dermatitis in this demographic are more uniform.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To compare the characteristics of allergic contact dermatitis (ACD) in older adults with those in the younger adult population (aged 18-45 years).

Main Methods:

  • A retrospective controlled study was conducted.
  • Data were collected from the medical records of 4199 patients.
  • Information gathered included age, gender, atopic diathesis, rash distribution, patch test reactions, and diagnoses.

Main Results:

  • The frequency of positive patch test reactions was lower in older adults than in younger individuals.
  • However, the incidence of clinically relevant positive reactions was higher in the older adult group.
  • No statistically significant difference in the final diagnosis of ACD was observed between the age groups.
  • Common allergens in older adults included fragrance mix, preservatives (Methylchloroisothiazolinone/methylisothiazolinone [MCI/MI]), and nickel sulfate.

Conclusions:

  • This study, the first in Israel to analyze a substantial cohort of older adult patients with ACD, enhances understanding of ACD's clinical parameters in this demographic.
  • Findings are expected to aid in reducing the disease burden associated with ACD in older adults.
