Lung Transplant After a Heart Transplant: A Case Report

• A patient with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis underwent a heart transplant.
• Six years post-heart transplant, the patient developed end-stage lung disease requiring a left single lung transplant.
• This staged approach was successfully performed.

Findings:

• The left single lung transplant was successful 6 years after the initial heart transplant.
• The patient's outcome demonstrates the feasibility of a staged heart-lung transplant strategy.
• Early-stage interstitial lung disease did not preclude successful heart transplantation.

Implications:

• This case suggests a staged heart-lung transplant approach can be a viable option.
• It may help mitigate prolonged waiting times for lung allografts.
• Early interstitial lung disease may not be an absolute contraindication for initial heart transplantation.
