Percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL) successfully treated 71 of 100 kidney and ureteric stones, including staghorn calculi. While most complications were minor, 11 cases required further intervention, and 5 patients experienced stone recurrence.

Area of Science:

  • Nephrology
  • Urology
  • Minimally Invasive Surgery

Context:

  • 100 reno-ureteric calculi treated between April 1984 and November 1986.
  • 78 calculi >1 cm, 15 ureteric, 13 staghorn.
  • 31 patients had prior lumbotomy.

Purpose:

  • To evaluate the efficacy and complications of PCNL for reno-ureteric calculi.
  • To assess outcomes in complex cases, including staghorn and residual stones.

Summary:

  • PCNL achieved total success in 71 cases, including 10 of 13 staghorn calculi.
  • 18 cases had residual stone debris; 11 cases had complete failure requiring further intervention.
  • No nephrectomies or loss of renal function occurred; mean hospital stay was 7 days.

Impact:

  • PCNL demonstrates effectiveness for various kidney and ureteric stones, with manageable complications.
  • Long-term follow-up revealed recurrence in 5/45 stone-free patients and fragment enlargement in 2/24 with residual stones.
