  • Twenty subjects with presbyopia underwent standard sensory and sighting eye dominance tests.
  • Two psychophysical tests, the Preferential test and the Multifocal Acceptance Score (MAS-2EV) test, were employed to assess perceived visual quality and eye dominance strength (EDS).
  • A Simultaneous Vision Simulator facilitated rapid comparison of different monovision corrections.

Main Results:

  • Standard sensory and sighting dominance matched in only 55% of subjects.
  • The Preferential test EDS and MAS-2EV EDS showed a high correlation.
  • Using the Preferential test as the gold standard, the MAS-2EV, sensory, and sighting tests achieved 79%, 64%, and 43% success rates, respectively, in selecting the correct eye for distance vision.

Conclusions:

  • Perceptual preference-based tests effectively identify the preferred eye for monovision correction and quantify eye dominance strength.
  • These new methods offer improved accuracy for eye selection in presbyopic monovision compared to traditional approaches.
  • The binocular visual simulator enables efficient clinical application of these eye preference tests.
