Insights
The dense middle cerebral artery sign on CT scans indicates a poorer prognosis for ischemic stroke patients. This sign is linked to thromboembolism, large infarction, and brain swelling, signaling a worse outcome.
Area of Science:
- Neurology
- Radiology
- Ischemic Stroke Research
Background:
- The dense middle cerebral artery (MCA) sign on CT scans is associated with thromboembolism in ischemic stroke.
- Early identification of stroke severity and prognosis is crucial for patient management.
Purpose of the Study:
- To evaluate the prognostic significance of the dense MCA sign in patients with ischemic stroke.
- To determine the association between the dense MCA sign and stroke outcomes.
Main Methods:
- Retrospective analysis of CT scans from 13 ischemic stroke patients exhibiting the dense MCA sign.
- Comparison of patient prognosis with a control group of stroke patients lacking the sign.
Main Results:
- Patients with the dense MCA sign demonstrated considerably poorer prognosis compared to controls.
- The dense MCA sign was associated with large infarction, brain edema, and unfavorable outcomes in the MCA territory.
Conclusions:
- The dense MCA sign is a valuable early indicator of poor prognosis in ischemic stroke.
- This radiological finding highlights the risk of severe infarction and associated complications.
Abstract:
Thirteen patients with a dense appearance of the horizontal part of the middle cerebral artery (MCA) "dense middle cerebral artery sign" in CT scans taken within 24 hours after onset of ischaemic stroke had considerably poorer prognosis than controls with stroke, but without the sign. A hyperdense appearance of the MCA is known to be associated with thromboembolism, but dense middle cerebral artery sign is also an early warning of a large infarction, brain oedema and poor prognosis in infarction in the MCA area.
