Summary

Body composition, including skeletal muscle mass and adipose tissue, did not impact overall survival or progression-free survival in multiple myeloma (MM) patients. Visceral adipose tissue may predict infectious complications in MM.

Background:

  • Body composition, including skeletal muscle mass (SMM), subcutaneous adipose tissue (SAT), and visceral adipose tissue (VAT), is crucial in clinical outcomes.
  • Previous studies suggest body composition impacts hematological disease prognosis.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine the effect of body composition parameters on overall survival (OS) and progression-free survival (PFS) in multiple myeloma (MM) patients.
  • To investigate the relationship between body composition and survival outcomes in MM.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective analysis of 123 MM patients between 2009 and 2019.
  • Whole-body computed tomography (CT) used for quantifying SMM, VAT, and SAT.
  • Assessment of sarcopenia, visceral obesity, and sarcopenic obesity.

  • No significant influence of sarcopenia, visceral obesity, or sarcopenic obesity on OS or PFS was observed.

Conclusions:

  • CT-defined body composition parameters do not influence survival in MM patients undergoing autologous stem-cell therapy.
  • Body composition may have a limited role in multiple myeloma prognosis.
  • VAT may serve as a predictor for infectious complications in MM patients.
