Summary

Culturally relevant, high-context color photographs are best for Bangla aphasia assessments. This study also found reduced language complexity in older Bangla speakers.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To lay the groundwork for a culturally specific Bangla aphasia assessment tool.

  • Ninety-six healthy native Bangla speakers across three age groups participated.
  • Spontaneous language production was analyzed for four picture stimuli varying in cultural relevance and visuographic properties.
  • Linguistic variables including type-token ratio, words per minute (WPM), and mean length of utterance (MLU) were measured.

  • Picture type significantly affected type-token ratio, WPM, and MLU.
  • Age group significantly impacted WPM, MLU, and complexity index.
  • High-context, color photographs elicited more comprehensive language production.

Conclusions:

  • Older Bangla speakers (65+) demonstrated reduced fluency and linguistic complexity.
