Background:

  • Adolescents are a vulnerable population susceptible to the adverse effects of particulate matter (PM).
  • Existing educational approaches may not adequately address PM-related health risks in schools.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To develop and validate the effectiveness of a school-based education program for coping with particulate matter (SEPC_PM).
  • To assess the program's impact on students' knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors concerning PM exposure.

Main Methods:

  • A nonequivalent control group pretest-posttest design was utilized with 113 South Korean high school students (ages 15-18).
  • The intervention group (n=56) received 8 sessions of the SEPC_PM over 4 weeks, while the control group (n=57) did not.
  • The program was developed based on the health belief model to enhance health-related behaviors.

Main Results:

  • The intervention group demonstrated statistically significant increases in knowledge about PM (p < .001).
  • Significant improvements were observed in health-managing behaviors, particularly precautions taken when outdoors (p = .029).
  • Perceived self-efficacy in health-managing behaviors, specifically body cleansing post-return, also showed a significant increase (p = .049).

Conclusions:

  • The school-based education program for coping with particulate matter (SEPC_PM) is effective in enhancing adolescent knowledge and protective behaviors.
  • The SEPC_PM can be recommended for integration into high school curricula to promote student health and mitigate PM risks.
