Area of Science:

  • Medical Education Technology
  • Simulation-Based Training
  • Augmented Reality in Healthcare

Background:

  • Traditional simulators lack crucial internal anatomical landmarks for procedural training.
  • Simulation is a cornerstone of medical education, particularly for developing procedural skills.
  • Mixed reality (MR) technology offers a potential solution to enhance simulation fidelity.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To develop and evaluate a novel mixed-reality (MR) simulator for lumbar puncture training.
  • To assess the usability and feasibility of MR technology in a medical skills training context.

Main Methods:

  • Recruited 40 participants (students, residents, faculty) with diverse experience levels.
  • Participants underwent training using an MR simulator providing internal anatomical structures.
  • Usability and feasibility were assessed via post-training surveys and performance metrics.

Main Results:

  • 90% of participants found the MR technology highly realistic; 95% agreed internal anatomy visualization aided the procedure.
  • 72.5% and 75% strongly agreed MR promoted learning and should be integrated into medical training.
  • Significant improvements in lumbar puncture success rates and reduced procedure times were observed across all experience levels.

Conclusions:

  • The MR simulator demonstrated high usability and feasibility for lumbar puncture training.
  • MR technology represents a valuable tool for simulated medical skills acquisition.
  • Further development and evaluation of MR in diverse clinical skills training scenarios are warranted.
