Background:

  • Social cognition, the understanding of self and others, is increasingly recognized as impaired in Parkinson's disease (PD).
  • Investigating social cognition in PD is crucial for a comprehensive understanding of the disease's impact.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess multiple domains of social cognition in Indian Parkinson's disease patients.
  • To utilize a culturally appropriate and validated instrument for social cognition assessment in this population.

Main Methods:

  • Recruited 52 individuals with Parkinson's disease (PD) and 31 healthy volunteers (HV).
  • Employed the Social Cognition Rating Tools in Indian Setting (SOCRATIS) to evaluate theory of mind (ToM), attributional biases, and social cue perception.
  • Assessed quality of life (QoL) using the PDQOL scale.

Main Results:

  • Parkinson's disease patients demonstrated significantly lower performance in first-order theory of mind (FOT index) and Faux Pas Composite Index (FPCI ALT) compared to healthy volunteers.
  • PD patients exhibited a higher tendency towards externalizing bias (EB), attributing negative events to external factors.
  • No significant association was found between social cognition indices and quality of life in the PD group.

Conclusions:

  • Parkinson's disease patients exhibit deficits in understanding social situations and inferring others' mental states.
  • Despite social cognition impairments, quality of life in Parkinson's disease patients was not adversely affected in this study.
  • Clinical factors did not predict the observed social cognition deficits in the studied Parkinson's disease cohort.
