Evolutionary Relationships through Genome Comparisons

5.9K
Genome comparison is one of the excellent ways to interpret the evolutionary relationships between organisms. The basic principle of genome comparison is that if two species share a common feature, it is likely encoded by the DNA sequence conserved between both species. The advent of genome sequencing technologies in the late 20th century enabled scientists to understand the concept of conservation of domains between species and helped them to deduce evolutionary relationships across diverse...

Genetic Variation01:25

Genetic Variation

340
Genetic variation is the diversity in DNA sequences found among individuals of the same species. This diversity is crucial for a species' survival because it helps organisms adapt to environmental changes. Genetic variation begins with fertilization, where an egg and sperm cell merge. Each of these cells carries 23 chromosomes, up to 46 in the fertilized egg. Chromosomes are long DNA strands that contain genes, the basic units of heredity.
Genes exist in different versions called alleles,...

Area of Science:

  • Plant breeding
  • Bioinformatics
  • Genomics

Background:

  • Genomic selection (GS) is crucial for accelerating genetic gain in plant breeding by predicting phenotypes from genotypes using statistical or machine learning models.
  • Current GS analysis involves complex data handling, model selection, and requires programming and statistical expertise, posing a barrier for many plant breeders.
  • The need for practical and user-friendly tools is evident to facilitate wider adoption of GS in routine breeding programs.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To develop a user-friendly, web-based platform (IP4GS) that simplifies complex genomic selection analysis for plant breeders.
  • To provide an accessible tool that requires minimal bioinformatics knowledge, enabling breeders to perform GS through point-and-click actions.

Main Methods:

  • Development of a web-based platform, IP4GS, featuring a graphical user interface.
  • Integration of seven commonly used GS models and eleven evaluation metrics.
  • Inclusion of visualization modules for data interpretation and analysis.

Main Results:

  • IP4GS offers a simplified workflow for GS analysis, abstracting away complex programming and statistical modeling.
  • The platform provides a comprehensive suite of tools, including multiple models and evaluation metrics, suitable for diverse breeding applications.
  • User-friendly interface allows breeders with limited bioinformatics expertise to conduct sophisticated GS analyses.

Conclusions:

  • IP4GS significantly lowers the technical barrier for implementing genomic selection in plant breeding.
  • The platform empowers plant breeders to leverage GS for faster genetic improvement by reducing reliance on specialized bioinformatics skills.
  • IP4GS enhances the practicality and accessibility of genomic selection, promoting its routine use in breeding programs.
