Summary

Parent-reported food allergies affect 11.2% of preschool children. Family history of allergies and childhood atopic dermatitis are significant risk factors for developing food allergies.

Background:

Food allergy is a growing public health concern with potentially severe outcomes.
Anaphylaxis is a life-threatening allergic reaction.
Increasing prevalence of food allergies necessitates population characterization.

Purpose of the Study:

To identify preschool children with parent-reported food allergies.
To characterize the population of children with food allergies.
To determine the types of food allergies prevalent in this age group.

Main Methods:

Cross-sectional study design.
Utilized parent/legal guardian questionnaires.
Included children attending preschools in Porto, Portugal.

Main Results:

11.2% of children reported food reactions/allergies.
Common allergens included milk, tree nuts, and peanuts.
Cutaneous and gastrointestinal symptoms were most frequent.
Parental/sibling allergy history and child's atopic dermatitis were significant risk factors.

Conclusions:

Parent-reported food allergies are present in 11.2% of preschool children.
Family history of food allergies and atopic dermatitis are associated with increased risk.
These factors are important considerations for identifying at-risk children.
