Summary

Capsaicin, a substance known to affect nerve fibers, does not change blood-brain barrier permeability in rats. This study investigated its effects on the central nervous system's protective barrier.

Background:

  • The blood-brain barrier (BBB) protects the central nervous system from harmful substances.
  • Perivascular sensory afferent nerve fibers are implicated in regulating BBB permeability.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the influence of perivascular sensory afferent nerve fibers on BBB permeability.
  • To determine if capsaicin affects BBB integrity.

Main Methods:

  • Experiments were conducted on halothane-anesthetized rats.
  • BBB permeability was assessed using [14C]alpha-aminoisobutyric acid tracer and Evans blue albumin extravasation.

Main Results:

  • Acute administration of capsaicin did not significantly alter the passage of the amino acid tracer into the brain.
  • Capsaicin did not cause significant Evans blue albumin extravasation in any brain area examined.

Conclusions:

  • Capsaicin, despite its known effects on peripheral vascular permeability and neuropeptide release, does not increase blood-brain barrier permeability.
  • Perivascular sensory afferent nerve fibers do not appear to significantly influence BBB permeability in this model.
