Background:

Traditional end-of-clerkship evaluations for surgical students suffer from recall bias and lack granular data.
Identifying specific areas for intervention in the medical student surgical learning environment is crucial for improvement.

Purpose of the Study:

To identify specific areas for intervention in the medical student surgical learning environment.
To utilize a novel real-time mobile application for collecting granular data on student experiences.

Main Methods:

A user-friendly mobile application was developed to gather real-time feedback from medical students during their surgical clerkship.
Thematic analysis was conducted on student-submitted responses over 48 weeks to identify recurring themes and emotions.

Main Results:

A total of 365 responses were collected from 54 medical students over 48 weeks.
Student feedback highlighted priorities including team inclusion, positive team relationships, witnessing compassionate patient care, rotation organization, and student well-being.
Responses were nearly evenly split between positive (52.9%) and negative (47.1%) emotions regarding these priorities.

Conclusions:

A novel mobile application effectively identified areas for enhancing the surgical clerkship learning environment.
Real-time, longitudinal data collection empowers educational leaders to implement targeted and timely improvements for medical students.
