    Background:

    • Untrained individuals experience significant physiological adaptations following a structured exercise regimen.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To evaluate training-induced physiological and performance changes in middle-aged and young adult men.
    • To assess the efficacy of a standardized treadmill walking test in reflecting training adaptations across different age groups.
    • To compare the training responses between middle-aged and young adult men over a six-week period.

    Main Methods:

    • A six-week training intervention was implemented for two groups of untrained men: middle-aged (mean age 41.3 yr) and young adults (mean age 19.9 yr).
    • Participants underwent a standardized treadmill walking test before and after the training period.
    • Physiological measures including heart rate, blood lactic acid, Respiratory Exchange Ratio, Ventilatory Equivalents, and oxygen cost were recorded.
    • Performance was assessed via mean Two Mile times.

    Main Results:

    • Middle-aged men exhibited significantly lower heart rates across all work intensities post-training compared to young adults.

    • Middle-aged men demonstrate greater relative improvements in several physiological markers compared to young adults following similar training.
    • The developed treadmill walking test is a valid and sensitive tool for assessing training-induced adaptations in diverse adult age groups.
