    Summary

Diagnosing septic arthritis, a serious joint infection, can be challenging. Bone imaging aids in distinguishing joint infections from skin infections like cellulitis, crucial for early treatment and preventing further damage.

    Area of Science:

    • Orthopedics
    • Radiology
    • Infectious Diseases

    Background:

    • Cellulitis and septic arthritis can present with similar symptoms, complicating diagnosis.
    • Prompt and accurate diagnosis of septic arthritis is vital to prevent severe joint damage and osteomyelitis.

    Observation:

    • Two patients initially diagnosed with foot cellulitis were found to have underlying bacterial arthritis.
    • Aspiration attempts targeted the incorrect joint in both cases, delaying diagnosis.

    Findings:

    • Technetium-99m phosphate bone imaging successfully identified the arthropathies when initial roentgenograms were normal.
    • Radionuclide imaging proved helpful in differentiating between skin and joint infections.

    Implications:
