    Summary

Pseudoseizures, or psychogenic non-epileptic seizures, are often misdiagnosed as epilepsy. Proper diagnosis using electroencephalography is crucial to avoid incorrect treatment and side effects.

    Area of Science:

    • Neurology
    • Psychiatry

    Background:

    • Intractable seizures require accurate diagnosis for effective management.
    • Misdiagnosis can lead to inappropriate treatment and adverse drug effects.

    Observation:

    • Three patients presented with seizures initially diagnosed as status epilepticus.
    • Electroencephalography during provoked episodes revealed pseudoseizures (psychogenic non-epileptic seizures).
    • Psychiatric evaluation identified underlying psychological disorders in these patients.

    Findings:

    • Provoked electroencephalography is effective in diagnosing pseudoseizures.
    • Psychological disorders are often associated with pseudoseizures.

    Implications:

    • Considering pseudoseizures in differential diagnosis improves patient outcomes.
    • Accurate diagnosis prevents unnecessary antiepileptic drug exposure and side effects.
    • Supportive psychiatric therapy can resolve pseudoseizure episodes.
