    Summary

    Lactate dehydrogenase and alkaline phosphatase blood tests often fail to detect small or large liver metastases. These enzyme assays are not reliable for diagnosing hepatic metastases, even in patients with confirmed disease.

    Background:

    • Hepatic metastases significantly impact patient prognosis.
    • Accurate detection of liver metastases is crucial for treatment planning.
    • Standard enzyme assays are commonly used but their efficacy is questioned.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To evaluate the diagnostic accuracy of lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) and alkaline phosphatase (ALP) in detecting hepatic metastases.
    • To determine the rate of false-negative results for these enzyme assays in patients with confirmed liver metastases.

    Main Methods:

    • Retrospective analysis of 38 patients with confirmed hepatic metastases.
    • Blood samples for LDH and ALP levels were collected within two weeks of liver scan confirmation.
    • Analysis of enzyme levels in relation to the size and number of liver metastases.
