Summary

Chopart amputation can lead to foot deformities, but a novel muscle balancing technique preserved foot function. This innovative approach allowed a patient to walk independently without a prosthesis, improving quality of life after lower limb amputation.

Area of Science:

  • Orthopedic Surgery
  • Podiatric Surgery
  • Reconstructive Surgery

Background:

  • Lower limb amputation is often necessary for patients with foot necrosis due to diabetes or peripheral arterial disease.
  • Preserving the heel is crucial for functional prognosis after amputation.
  • Traditional Chopart amputation can result in unfavorable varus and equinus deformities.

Observation:

  • A 78-year-old male patient with ischemic necrosis of the right forefoot underwent Chopart amputation.
  • Surgical techniques included Achilles tendon lengthening and transfer of tibialis anterior and peroneus brevis tendons to prevent deformity.
  • The patient was followed up for 7 years post-operation.

Findings:

  • The Chopart amputation with muscle balancing technique successfully prevented varus and equinus deformities.

  • The patient achieved independent ambulation without a prosthesis, walking on his heel.
  • Functional recovery allowed for step motion with a foot prosthesis.
  • Implications:

    • Muscle balancing during Chopart amputation offers a promising solution to prevent post-operative deformities.
    • This technique can significantly improve functional outcomes and patient mobility after lower limb amputation.
    • The findings suggest a potential for enhanced quality of life for amputees through innovative surgical interventions.
