    Summary

    Aerophagia, or excessive air swallowing, is not more common in hyperventilation syndrome patients. This study found no significant difference in gastric air volume between hyperventilators and healthy individuals.

    Background:

    • Understanding the relationship between air swallowing and hyperventilation is crucial for accurate diagnosis and treatment.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To quantitatively assess and compare the extent of aerophagia in individuals with hyperventilation syndrome versus a healthy control group.
    • To investigate potential correlations between the amount of swallowed air and subjective symptoms experienced by hyperventilators.

    Main Methods:

    • Chest X-rays were utilized to estimate gastric air volume, serving as a proxy for the extent of aerophagia.
    • A cohort of 62 patients diagnosed with hyperventilation syndrome was compared to 62 age- and sex-matched healthy controls.
