The CanMEDS physician competency framework is undergoing a 2025 revision.
This update addresses societal shifts, including the COVID-19 pandemic, and acknowledges impacts of colonialism, discrimination, climate change, and technology on healthcare and training.

Purpose of the Study:

To identify emerging concepts in medical literature relevant to physician competencies for the CanMEDS 2025 revision.
To inform the update by highlighting concepts absent or underrepresented in the 2015 framework.

Main Methods:

Conducted a literature scan of five medical education journals (Oct 2018-Oct 2021).
Performed title and abstract review, followed by thematic analysis to identify and label emerging concepts.
Utilized a member check for validation.

Main Results:

Identified ten emerging themes from 1017 of 4973 articles (20.5%).
