Summary

Most patients with chronic retinal conditions are interested in telehealth. Dry age-related macular degeneration increased interest, while multiple ocular diagnoses decreased it. Provider influence was significant.

Background:

Chronic retinal conditions require ongoing monitoring and management.
Traditional in-person follow-up visits can be burdensome for patients.
Telehealth offers a potential solution for accessible and continuous patient care.

Purpose of the Study:

To investigate patient interest in telehealth services for managing chronic retinal conditions.
To identify factors influencing patient willingness to adopt hybrid telehealth evaluations.

Main Methods:

A single-center study surveyed 159 eligible patients with chronic retinal conditions regarding their interest in telehealth.
Patients were contacted via telephone to complete an interest survey.
Data on demographics, diagnoses, and prior visits were collected and analyzed.

Main Results:

35.1% of surveyed patients expressed interest in telehealth for their next follow-up.
Dry age-related macular degeneration was linked to higher telehealth interest (P=.04).
Multiple ocular diagnoses correlated with decreased telehealth interest (P=.04), while healthcare provider was a significant predictor (P=.03).

Conclusions:

A significant portion of patients with chronic retinal conditions are open to integrating telehealth into routine care.
Patient interest in telehealth varies by diagnosis and provider.
Tailoring telehealth implementation based on patient preferences and clinical needs is recommended.
