Summary

Antioxidants like alpha-tocopherol, green tea extract, and sodium ascorbate can restore bracket bond strength after hydrogen peroxide bleaching. These agents offer an effective alternative to delaying orthodontic bracket bonding.

Background:

  • Hydrogen peroxide bleaching can compromise shear bond strength in immediate bracket bonding.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To compare the effectiveness of alpha-tocopherol, green tea extract, and sodium ascorbate in reversing the negative effects of hydrogen peroxide bleaching on bracket bond strength.
  • To evaluate these antioxidants as alternatives to delayed bracket bonding.

Main Methods:

  • 105 human premolars were divided into 7 groups, including a control and bleached groups.
  • Bleached teeth underwent immediate bonding, delayed bonding (1-2 weeks), or immediate treatment with 10% alpha-tocopherol, green tea extract, or sodium ascorbate.
  • Specimens were subjected to thermal cycling and tested for shear bond strength and adhesive remnant index.

Main Results:

  • Immediate bonding and 1-week delayed bonding significantly reduced shear bond strength compared to the control.
  • No significant difference in shear bond strength was observed in the 2-week delay group, antioxidant-treated groups, and the control group.

Conclusions:

  • 10% alpha-tocopherol, green tea extract, and sodium ascorbate effectively restore shear bond strength after hydrogen peroxide bleaching.
  • These antioxidant treatments serve as viable alternatives to delaying bracket bonding, optimizing orthodontic treatment protocols.
