A pro-inflammatory diet, measured by the Dietary Inflammatory Index (DII), is linked to a higher risk of depression in US adults. Insulin resistance (IR) did not mediate this association.
Area of Science:
- Nutrition Science
- Psychiatry
- Epidemiology
Background:
- Dietary patterns significantly influence chronic disease risk.
- Emerging evidence suggests a link between diet quality and mental health outcomes, including depression.
Purpose of the Study:
- To investigate the association between the Dietary Inflammatory Index (DII) and energy-adjusted DII (E-DII) with depression risk.
- To explore whether insulin resistance (IR), assessed by homeostatic model assessment-IR (HOMA-IR), mediates this relationship.
Main Methods:
- Analysis of data from 70,190 participants in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2005-2018.
- Logistic regression models to assess the association between DII/E-DII and depression.
- Mediation analysis to evaluate the role of HOMA-IR.
Main Results:
- Higher DII scores were observed in individuals with depression.
- Participants in the highest quartile of DII had significantly increased odds of depression (OR: 1.82, 95% CI: 1.28-2.58), with a dose-response relationship.
- No evidence of interaction or mediation by HOMA-IR was found for the DII-depression link.
Conclusions:
- A pro-inflammatory diet is associated with an increased risk of depression among US adults.
- Insulin resistance does not appear to mediate the relationship between dietary inflammation and depression risk.
