    Background:

    • Nocturnal head banging and body rocking (jactatio nocturna) are typically considered developmental or behavioral disorders in children.
    • Some cases suggest jactatio nocturna may be a manifestation of sleep disorders, akin to somnambulism and pavor nocturnus.

    Observation:

    • Episodes of jactatio nocturna were observed in a patient with global encephalopathy and frontal lobe dysfunction following a closed head injury.
    • This patient's condition was successfully treated with imipramine.

    Findings:

    • Jactatio nocturna in this case was associated with global encephalopathy and frontal lobe dysfunction post-head injury.
    • Imipramine treatment was effective in resolving the observed episodes.
    • The findings suggest jactatio nocturna may stem from partial or defective arousal during light non-REM sleep, possibly due to frontal arousal mechanism dysfunction.

    Implications:

    • Jactatio nocturna should be differentiated from post-traumatic seizures in patients with head injuries.
