A 16-year-old boy had a subcutaneous parasitic cyst caused by Dirofilaria repens. This rare zoonotic infection, transmitted by mosquitoes, highlights the importance of recognizing emerging diseases.

Background:

Dirofilariasis is a zoonotic parasitic disease transmitted by infected mosquitoes.
Human infections are typically asymptomatic or present with mild symptoms, but subcutaneous dirofilariasis is a rare manifestation.

Observation:

A 16-year-old male presented with a two-month history of forearm swelling.
Imaging revealed a parasitic cyst, which was surgically excised.
Histopathological examination confirmed the presence of Dirofilaria repens.

Findings:

The case represents a confirmed instance of human subcutaneous dirofilariasis.
Dirofilaria repens was identified as the causative agent.
Successful treatment involved surgical excision and diethylcarbamazine therapy.

Implications:

Clinicians should consider dirofilariasis in the differential diagnosis of subcutaneous parasitic infections.
Emerging zoonoses, influenced by climate change, necessitate increased vigilance and diagnostic awareness.
Early diagnosis and prevention of zoonotic infections have significant epidemiological value.
