Community Based Intervention

67
Community-based interventions in mental health represent a paradigm shift from institution-centered care to treatments embedded within the fabric of local communities. By prioritizing inclusion and leveraging existing societal structures, this approach fosters a supportive environment conducive to addressing mental health challenges while promoting individual dignity and agency.

Medical management of tuberculosis (TB) patients involves a comprehensive approach that includes diagnosis, treatment, and monitoring. The specific strategies can vary depending on the type of tuberculosis (latent or active), the patient's overall health status, and other considerations.
Latent tuberculosis infection occurs when TB bacteria are present in a person's body, but are not causing illness or symptoms. It is not contagious, and preventive treatment is crucial to avoid the...

Pulmonary Tuberculosis I

295
Tuberculosis, often called TB, is a contagious illness primarily caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis. It mainly affects the lung parenchyma but can also impact other body parts.
Causative Organism
The primary infectious agent causing tuberculosis is Mycobacterium tuberculosis, a slow-growing, acid-fast, aerobic rod that exhibits sensitivity to heat and ultraviolet light. Instances of Mycobacterium bovis and Mycobacterium avium contributing to the development of TB infection are rare.

Pulmonary Tuberculosis II

286
Tuberculosis, or TB, is a bacterial infectious disease caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis. While its primary impact is on the lungs, leading to pulmonary tuberculosis, it can also affect various other organs, a condition referred to as extrapulmonary tuberculosis.
Here is a detailed explanation of its pathophysiology:
Transmission: The process begins when a person inhales droplet nuclei containing M. tuberculosis. These are typically released into the air when an individual with pulmonary or...

Summary

Online training for healthcare professionals on tobacco cessation significantly improved attitudes towards tobacco users, fostering greater sympathy and reducing negative feelings. While knowledge gains were minor, the program demonstrated potential for positive attitudinal shifts in managing tobacco use disorders.

Area of Science:

  • Public Health
  • Medical Education
  • Behavioral Science

Background:

  • Tobacco use disorders (TUDs) represent a significant public health challenge.
  • A gap exists in healthcare professionals' training and capacity to treat TUDs.
  • Technology-based interventions offer a scalable solution to bridge this treatment gap.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess the impact of an online training program (OTP) on healthcare professionals' knowledge and attitudes regarding tobacco cessation.
  • To evaluate changes in healthcare professionals' practices related to tobacco cessation support.

Main Methods:

  • A pre-post quasi-experimental study design was employed.
  • A half-day online training program on tobacco cessation was delivered.
  • Structured questionnaires assessed knowledge, attitudes, and practices before and after the OTP among 293 participants.

Main Results:

  • Post-OTP, participants showed increased knowledge, though not statistically significant (P = 1.2).
  • Significant positive attitudinal shifts were observed: reduced anger/disappointment (MOD = 0.21, P = 0.0007), increased sympathy/concern (MOD = -0.22, P = 0.0005), and belief in equal medical care for tobacco users (MOD = -0.177, P = 0.001).
  • Attitudes regarding responsibility did not change significantly (P < 0.05). Practice changes included more inquiries about tobacco use and cessation advice, but less assessment, assistance, and referral.

Conclusions:

  • Technology-based training, specifically OTPs, can effectively foster positive attitudinal changes among healthcare professionals towards individuals with tobacco use disorders.
  • While knowledge improvements may be modest, the enhancement of empathy and supportive attitudes is a crucial outcome for improving TUD treatment.
  • Further refinement of training may be needed to significantly impact all aspects of cessation practice (assessment, assistance, referral).
