The carrier state in pertussis.

    Summary

Healthy adults working with children are unlikely to spread pertussis. A study found only one carrier of Bordetella pertussis among 391 close contacts during an epidemic, suggesting low transmission risk from asymptomatic adults.

    Area of Science:

    • Infectious Disease Epidemiology
    • Microbiology
    • Public Health

    Background:

    • Pertussis (whooping cough) remains a concern, particularly regarding transmission dynamics.
    • The role of healthy adults in the spread of pertussis is not fully understood.
    • Close contact with children is a potential risk factor for exposure.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the prevalence of Bordetella pertussis in healthy adults.
    • To assess the potential role of these adults in pertussis transmission.
    • To determine if healthy adults working with children are significant carriers during an epidemic.

    Main Methods:

    • Investigated the nasopharyngeal flora of 391 healthy individuals.
    • Participants worked in close contact with children.
    • Sampling occurred during the peak of a pertussis epidemic.

    Main Results:

    • Only one carrier of Bordetella pertussis was identified.
    • Despite exposure, the carrier rate was very low.
    • This suggests limited asymptomatic carriage in this population.

    Conclusions:

    • Healthy adults working closely with children appear to play a minimal role in pertussis spread.
    • Asymptomatic carriage of Bordetella pertussis in this demographic is low during epidemics.
    • Further research may explore other transmission routes or populations.
