Area of Science:

  • Plastic Surgery
  • Facial Aesthetic Surgery
  • Otolaryngology

Background:

  • Square-shaped and large moon-shaped faces are common in East Asian populations.
  • Mandibular contour is a key factor in lower facial aesthetics.
  • Current mandible contouring predominantly uses intraoral approaches, limiting cosmetic external applications.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the efficacy and safety of mandible angle reduction using a retroauricular incision.
  • To compare outcomes with traditional intraoral methods.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective study of 42 patients undergoing mandibular angle reduction.
  • Procedures performed via intraoral and retroauricular incisions.
  • Clinical outcomes assessed using Global Aesthetic Improvement Scale and Visual Analog Scale.

Main Results:

  • Successful surgery in all patients with no significant complications.
  • Appropriate postoperative mandibular contour achieved.
  • High patient satisfaction reported.
  • Short-term complications (hematoma, wound disruption) resolved within 3 weeks.
  • No serious long-term complications observed.

Conclusions:

  • Mandible angle resection via retroauricular approach is a promising cosmetic alternative.
  • This method allows for speedy recovery and rapid return to daily activities.
  • It offers a viable option for patients seeking facial contouring with reduced aesthetic concerns.
