Type II Diabetes II: Pathophysiology01:24

Type II Diabetes II: Pathophysiology

PathophysiologyType 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM ) is a chronic metabolic disorder characterized by insulin resistance and progressive pancreatic β-cell dysfunction, leading to impaired glucose homeostasis. It results from interactions among genetic predisposition, environmental factors, and metabolic stressors, such as overnutrition and a sedentary lifestyle.Insulin Resistance and Glucose DysregulationEarly T2DM involves insulin resistance in skeletal muscle, adipose tissue, and the liver.

Area of Science:

  • Metabolic research
  • Obesity research
  • Adipose tissue biology

Background:

  • White adipose tissue (AT) dysfunction is linked to cardiometabolic diseases in obesity.
  • Dysfunction involves impaired AT expansion, enlarged adipocytes, altered secretion, and inflammation.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To review the pathophysiological mechanisms of white AT dysfunction.
  • To discuss emerging methods for assessing AT functionality.

Main Methods:

  • Literature review of pathophysiological mechanisms.
  • Analysis of current research on AT assessment tools.

Main Results:

  • White AT dysfunction is a key factor in obesity comorbidities.
  • Identifying individuals with AT dysfunction is vital for predicting metabolic risk.

Conclusions:

  • Further research into AT dysfunction mechanisms is needed.
  • Development of simple tools to assess AT functionality is essential for early detection of metabolic risk in obese individuals.
