Area of Science:

  • Biomedical Engineering
  • Human Factors Engineering
  • Computer Vision

Background:

  • Accurate anthropometric measurements are crucial for various applications.
  • Traditional anthropometric methods can be complex, time-consuming, and require specialized equipment and trained personnel.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To develop an accessible system for estimating human anthropometric parameters.
  • To utilize a low-cost depth camera (Kinect v2) for 3D body scanning and measurement estimation.

Main Methods:

  • A system comprising a rotating platform, Kinect v2 depth sensor, and PC was designed.
  • 3D body data was captured for 129 men aged 18-28.
  • Anthropometric parameters were estimated from the 3D scan data.

Main Results:

  • The developed system demonstrated satisfactory precision for a majority of estimated anthropometric parameters.
  • The largest measurement error was observed for waist circumference.
  • The system proved effective for anthropometric measurements.

Conclusions:

  • The proposed Kinect v2-based system offers a cost-effective and practical solution for anthropometric assessment.
  • This technology has the potential to simplify and improve the accessibility of human body measurements.
