Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess the impact of the Support, Educate, Empower (SEE) program on self-determination theory (SDT) metrics.
  • To evaluate changes in patient-centered outcomes following the SEE program.

Main Methods:

  • A 7-month personalized glaucoma coaching program (SEE) was implemented.
  • Participants (n=39) completed pre- and post-intervention surveys assessing SDT, glaucoma knowledge, self-efficacy, distress, and perceived benefits.
  • Surveys included the Treatment Self-regulation Questionnaire, Healthcare-Climate Questionnaire, and Perceived Competence scale.

Main Results:

  • Significant improvements were observed in SDT tenets: competence (P=0.0002), autonomy (P=0.044), and relatedness (P=0.002).
  • Glaucoma-related distress decreased (P=0.004), while confidence in asking/getting questions answered improved (P=0.008, P=0.009).
  • Perceived competence positively correlated with reduced glaucoma-related distress (r=-0.56, P=0.005).

Conclusions:

  • The SEE program effectively enhanced autonomous motivation, perceived support, and competence in glaucoma patients.
  • These findings support the utility of SDT-guided interventions for improving patient-centered outcomes in glaucoma management.
