Circulating immune complexes (CIC) appear transiently after myocardial infarction in most patients. Persistent CIC may indicate an unfavorable prognosis and are linked to prior respiratory infections.

    Area of Science:

    • Immunology
    • Cardiology

    Context:

    • Myocardial infarction (MI) is a leading cause of death globally.
    • The role of circulating immune complexes (CIC) in the pathophysiology of MI is not fully understood.

    Purpose:

    • To investigate the presence and dynamics of CIC in patients following myocardial infarction.
    • To identify clinical factors associated with CIC positivity post-MI.

    Summary:

    • 604 patients were assessed for CIC post-MI using C1q solid phase RIA.
    • 19.6% of patients had CIC, with most resolving within 2-4 weeks.
    • CIC-positive patients showed a higher incidence of prior respiratory infections and less family history of cardiac disease.

    Impact:

    • CIC presence after MI may be transient, linked to myocardial tissue antigen release.

  • Persistent CIC could indicate pre-existing conditions contributing to MI onset.
  • Persistent CIC post-MI may serve as an unfavorable prognostic marker.
