Purpose of the Study:

  • To update the national evidence-based standards for flexible sigmoidoscopy (FS) training and certification.
  • To ensure trainees attain minimum competency standards for independent practice in FS.

Main Methods:

  • A modified Delphi process involving experts and trainees was conducted from 2019-2020.
  • Literature review and Grading of Recommendations, Assessment, Development and Evaluations (GRADE) appraisal informed recommendation statements.
  • Anonymous voting and peer review by national stakeholders achieved consensus on revised criteria.

Main Results:

  • Forty-one recommendation statements were generated across competence definition, acquisition, assessment, and post-certification support.
  • Revised criteria include achieving key performance indicators (e.g., >90% rectal retroversion, >90% polyp retrieval, <10% severe discomfort).
  • Minimum procedure count (≥175), recent practice (15+ procedures in 3 months), specific training courses, formative and summative assessments (DOPS), and reflective practice are required.

Conclusions:

  • UK standards for flexible sigmoidoscopy (FS) training and certification have been updated.
  • The updated standards aim to support training, uphold FS and polypectomy standards, and assist newly independent practitioners.
