Pediatric collagenous colitis is rare, with few documented cases of collagenous gastroenteritis and colitis. This report details a child whose condition resolved spontaneously, highlighting a rare presentation of this pediatric gastrointestinal disorder.
Area of Science:
- Pediatric Gastroenterology
- Gastrointestinal Pathology
- Rare Diseases
Background:
- Collagenous colitis is infrequently diagnosed in pediatric populations.
- Collagenous gastroenteritis and colitis are even rarer, with limited existing literature.
- Standard presentations typically do not involve protein-losing enteropathy.
Observation:
- A pediatric patient presented with chronic, nonbloody diarrhea and lower extremity edema.
- The edema was identified as secondary to protein-losing enteropathy.
- This constellation of symptoms indicated a rare disease presentation.
Findings:
- The diagnosed condition was collagenous gastroenteritis and colitis.
- The patient experienced spontaneous disease resolution.
- The child remained asymptomatic without requiring pharmacologic intervention.
Implications:
- This case underscores the importance of considering collagenous gastroenteritis and colitis in children with similar symptoms.
- The spontaneous remission suggests potential for non-pharmacologic recovery in select pediatric cases.
- Further research into rare pediatric gastrointestinal disorders is warranted to improve diagnostic and therapeutic strategies.

Inflammatory Bowel Disease II: Crohn's Disease
Inflammatory bowel disease, commonly known as IBD, refers to a collection of disorders that lead to persistent inflammation of the gastrointestinal tract. The two types of IBD are ulcerative colitis, which impacts the colon, and Crohn's disease, which can involve any part of the gastrointestinal segment.
