[Weight of major organs in eutrophic and hypotrophic neonates]

Brain, heart, liver, and kidney weight are analyzed from autopsy material derived from 236 appropriate for gestational age and 92 small for gestational age newborns. Average organ weight was calculated by gestational age in weeks and by birthweight in 100 gram divisions. The correlation between gestational age and organ weight was, for all organs, significantly different for the small for gestational age newborns compared to appropriate for gestational age newborns. Birthweight to individual organ weight correlations were virtually the same for appropriate for gestational age and small for gestational age newborns. The table of organ weights by 100 gram subdivisions may serve as a basis for determining whether growth of an organ was normal or retarded.
