    Summary

Tunable Smith-Purcell radiation (SPR) was achieved by rotating a 2D nanodisk array with an electron beam. This method enables wavelength modulation for nanoscale light sources.

    Area of Science:

    • Physics
    • Materials Science
    • Nanotechnology

    Background:

    • Smith-Purcell radiation (SPR) is strong, far-field radiation from charged particles interacting with a medium.
    • Wavelength tunability of SPR is crucial for applications like particle detection and nanoscale light sources.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To demonstrate tunable SPR using a 2D metallic nanodisk array.
    • To explore the mechanism behind wavelength modulation in SPR.

    Main Methods:

    • An electron beam was moved parallel to a 2D metallic nanodisk array.
    • The nanodisk array was rotated in-plane to tune the SPR emission spectrum.

    Main Results:

    • Rotating the nanodisk array caused the SPR spectrum to split into two peaks.

  • The shorter-wavelength peak blueshifted, and the longer-wavelength peak redshifted with increasing rotation angle.
  • Experimental results matched simulation data, confirming the effect.
  • Conclusions:

    • Tunable SPR was successfully achieved by manipulating a 2D nanodisk array with an electron beam.
    • The observed wavelength modulation is linked to quasiperiodic characteristics projected from the 2D lattice.
    • This technique offers potential for developing free-electron-driven, tunable nanoscale photon sources.
