    Background:

    • Parkinson's disease (PD) is a neurodegenerative disorder primarily affecting motor function.
    • Cognitive impairment is increasingly recognized as a significant non-motor symptom in PD.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To compare cognitive, memory, and psychomotor performance in untreated Parkinson's disease patients versus healthy controls.
    • To investigate the relationship between motor disability, mood, and cognitive function in Parkinson's disease.

    Main Methods:

    • A cohort of 67 untreated Parkinson's disease patients was assessed.
    • Cognitive, memory, and psychomotor tests were administered and compared to 43 age- and education-matched healthy controls.
    • Clinical assessments of motor symptoms (rigidity, hypokinesia, tremor) and mood were conducted.

    Main Results:

    • Parkinson's disease patients exhibited significant motor impairments, including slowness and delayed movement initiation, correlating with rigidity and hypokinesia.
    • Patients performed worse than controls on memory tasks requiring information processing and learning, but not on simple retrieval tasks.
    • Cognitive and memory performance did not correlate with the severity of motor disability or mood in patients.

    • Aging contributes to cognitive decline, but disease-specific processes are also implicated.
