Self-Report Tests of Personality01:22

Self-Report Tests of Personality

405
Self-report inventories are objective personality assessments that use multiple-choice items or numbered scales, typically ranging from 1 (strongly disagree) to 5 (strongly agree). They are often called Likert scales after Rensis Likert. These inventories are widely used due to their ease of administration and cost-effectiveness. One of the most prominent examples is the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI), initially developed in the 1940s to assess abnormal personality traits.

Self-Discrepancy Theory02:45

Self-Discrepancy Theory

18.4K
One influential perspective on what motivates people's behavior is detailed in Tory Higgin's self-discrepancy theory (Higgins, 1987). He proposed that people hold disagreeing internal representations of themselves that lead to different emotional states.

Data Validation01:03

Data Validation

5.1K
Data validation is an essential part of a comprehensive assessment. Validation is confirming or verifying and opening the door to gathering more assessment data as it clarifies vague or unclear data. The process of checking and verifying the collected information is called data validation. The primary purpose of data validation is to ensure data is as free from error, bias, and misinterpretation as possible.

Gas Thermometers and the Kelvin Scale01:22

Gas Thermometers and the Kelvin Scale

4.8K
The definition of temperature in terms of molecular motion suggests that there should be a lowest possible temperature, where the average kinetic energy of molecules is zero (or the minimum allowed by quantum mechanics). Experiments confirm the existence of such a temperature, called absolute zero. An absolute temperature scale is one whose zero point is absolute zero. Such scales are convenient in science because several physical quantities, such as the volume of an ideal gas, are directly...

Stereotype Content Model02:16

Stereotype Content Model

14.8K
The Stereotype Content Model (SCM) was first proposed by Susan Fiske and her colleagues (Fiske, Cuddy, Glick & Xu, 2002; see also Fiske, 2012 and Fiske, 2017). The SCM specifies that when someone encounters a new group, they will stereotype them based on two metrics: warmth—or that group’s perceived intent, and how likely they are to provide help or inflict harm—and competence—or their ability to carry out that objective. Depending on the warmth-competence...

Self-Presentation: Self-Monitoring and Self-Handicapping02:05

Self-Presentation: Self-Monitoring and Self-Handicapping

39.1K
People can go to great lengths to protect their self-image and present themselves in ways that they want others to see them. Sociologist Erving Goffman presented the idea that a person is like an actor on a stage. Calling his theory dramaturgy, Goffman believed that we use “impression management” to present ourselves to others as we hope to be perceived. Each situation is a new scene, and individuals perform different roles depending on who is present (Goffman, 1959). Think about...

Area of Science:

  • Workplace Psychology
  • Organizational Behavior
  • Abuse in Organizations

Background:

  • Gaslighting, a form of abuse, extends beyond personal relationships into the workplace.
  • Existing research on workplace abuse has largely overlooked the conceptualization and measurement of gaslighting.
  • This study addresses this gap by focusing on gaslighting within work settings.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To conceptualize gaslighting in the context of work relationships.
  • To develop and validate a reliable measure for gaslighting at work.
  • To explore the dimensions and boundaries of workplace gaslighting.

Main Methods:

  • Literature review on harmful leader behaviors, workplace abuse, and mistreatment.
  • Development of a 12-item measure, the Gaslighting at Work Questionnaire (GWQ).
  • Psychometric testing including internal consistency, face, and construct validity across three samples (N=679).
  • A time-lagged study to validate the scale within a nomological network.

Main Results:

  • Factor analysis confirmed a two-dimensional structure of gaslighting at work: trivialization and affliction.
  • The Gaslighting at Work Questionnaire (GWQ) demonstrated strong psychometric properties.
  • Validation through a time-lagged study showed significant relationships between gaslighting at work, role conflict, and job satisfaction.

Conclusions:

  • The GWQ provides a novel instrument for assessing supervisor gaslighting behaviors.
  • This research enhances understanding of harmful leadership and workplace mistreatment.
  • Highlights the importance of identifying and measuring gaslighting to address workplace abuse.
