  • Success rates for obtaining cost estimates were low: 58% for partial mastectomy, 35% for mastectomy, and 25% for sentinel lymph node biopsy (SLNB).

  • The median time to access cost calculators was 32 seconds.
  • Estimated pre-insurance costs varied: partial mastectomy ($16,509), mastectomy ($24,541), and SLNB ($12,342).
  • Significant cost variation was noted for SLNB (p=0.025), but not for mastectomy procedures.

  • Despite CMS mandates, hospital price transparency for breast cancer surgery remains inadequate.
  • Poor success rates and cost variability hinder informed patient decision-making.
  • Improvements in hospital cost calculator quality are crucial for patients undergoing breast cancer treatment.
