New methods for whole blood oximetry.

J M Schmitt, F G Mihm, J D Meindl

    Annals of Biomedical Engineering

    Summary

New methods accurately measure blood oxygen saturation (SO2) and hematocrit (Hct) using backscattered light. This technique overcomes limitations of previous instruments by accounting for Hct and sensor geometry for precise oximetry.

    Area of Science:

    • Biomedical optics
    • Medical instrumentation
    • Blood diagnostics

    Background:

    • Existing oximetry methods rely on empirical linear relationships.
    • These methods inadequately account for hematocrit (Hct) and transducer geometry.
    • Accurate measurement of blood oxygen saturation (SO2) and Hct is critical for patient care.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To develop novel techniques for simultaneous determination of Hct and SO2.
    • To address the limitations of prior backscattered light oximetry instruments.
    • To propose a practical implementation for improved blood analysis.

    Main Methods:

    • Utilized theoretical and experimental analysis of backscattered light.
    • Investigated the relationship between SO2, Hct, and light intensity ratios.
    • Developed a method using ratios of backscattered intensities from two infrared sources.

    Main Results:

    • Demonstrated that empirical linear models are inadequate for SO2 and Hct determination.
    • Established a new calibration method using a family of curves for independent SO2 and Hct measurement.
    • Showcased the feasibility of independent Hct and SO2 determination.

    Conclusions:

    • The proposed technique offers a more accurate approach to blood oximetry.
    • Independent determination of Hct and SO2 is achievable with the new method.
    • A practical oximetry system with a catheter-tip sensor and microprocessor is proposed.
